in the field of Development of catalytic systems for valorization of biomass
into fuels This project will take an integrated and innovative approach on the
interface between homogeneous, heterogeneous and biocatalysis with a goal to
arrive at hybrid multifunctional catalytic materials capable of the conversion
of cellulose to fuels. A significant route to be studied is the depolymerization
of cellulose to glucose followed by dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural.
Subsequent steps to be addressed are the further hydration to levulinic acid,
hydrogenation to valerolactone and decomposition to even more suitable fuel
components.
